    Two Galleries in Kensington Gardens

A 1930s tea pavilion and an 1805 gunpowder store, now home to Serpentine’s contemporary art programme.

Serpentine opened in 1970 and runs two galleries in Kensington Gardens. Serpentine South is a Grade II listed former tea pavilion built in the 1930s by James Grey West. Serpentine North is a Grade II listed gunpowder store from 1805, which opened to the public in 2013 with a modern extension designed by Zaha Hadid.

The Magazine, inside the Hadid extension, is the largest space for events, taking 200 to 250 standing, 100 for a seated dinner or 120 theatre style. Capacity in the galleries depends on the exhibition on show. Each summer the Serpentine Pavilion, designed by a different architect since 2000, can also be hired from June to October.
